ARTIST STATEMENT/INFLUENCE: 
The seat of the chair looks like the gentle swell of a wave to me. I circled this chair, learned its form and drew it from several angles. Its shapes reminded me of the ocean and the beach - a place I dearly love. An idea formed as my son prepared to leave for an extended ocean voyage. He loves to travel. He had the opportunity to sail by the Nicobar Islands in the Andaman Sea just northeast of Malaysia. He explained the low flat landform typified by a reef island. Just off the beach on one of these islands, there's a shipwreck. I used his photo as my inspiration. This view above and below the water is what I imagine a swimmer or diver might see as he shifts his gaze from the glorious colors of the undersea to the sun's brilliance.
