The Golden/Sacred Cod is a traditional symbol of the New England fishing industry. The Cod was the first export of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and the basis of the state’s economy until the Industrial Revolution. Because of the importance of the cod industry, a carving of a painted wooden codfish has hung in the House of Representatives Chamber in the Massachusetts State House in Boston since the early 18th century, as well as on church steeples and above doorways all around New England.
