The first 2009 quarter commemorates the District of Columbia, selected by George Washington to become the seat of the federal government. Subsequent 2009 quarters commemorate the five U.S. Territories in the order that they became United States possessions: The Commonweath of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the United States Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
